Memorial website in the memory of your loved one

This website has been  created in memory of our daughter, Kristen Nicole Proffitt Barker. Kristen blessed us all by showing up...late...on October 9th, 1985.  But on July 26th 2006, Kristen died suddenly as a result of complications from her diabetes...ketoacidosis.  She was only 20 years old. She left us all far too early.

Kristen was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes at the age of 9, requiring insulin to live. She battled with many aspects of this disease, both physically and emotionally, only to fall victim to it at such an early age. This website has been created to celebrate her life, talents and impact she had on so many people she knew, and now, many she will never know...at least in this life, though she will introduce herself to you one day far beyond this realm. Until then, get to know her a little here through some photos and her art. If you wish to know more, just send me an email and I’ll do my best to fill you in on the beauty, love and selfless giving of our daughter, Kristen.

We deeply appreciate the incredible love and support we have received from so many friends and family throughout the country, and the continued prayers and well-wishes still sent our way. Your generosity of heart shed hope and light in a troubling time. We will ever be grateful.

Kristen's Letter to me...
  • This is a letter Kristen wrote to me on my computer on Father's Day in 2001.  Though very personal, I thought I would share so more of you can see how amazing she was:

    Dear Daddy-

To be with you on this special day
    Is really cool this year
    It hasn’t happened very often
    Maybe every other year

    But still we gotta remember
That no matter how far apart we are
The bond that holds us together
Hasn’t broken, torn, or withered by far.

And that bond they call Fatherly Love
    Is always there for us
Even if I grow old and you stay young,
That special trust is always a must.

You always have been there for me
If I’m happy, sad, or (mostly) mad
Hopefully I can return the favor
For all the advice you’ve offered me, and I was glad to have

  • “Old” is just a state of mind if you stay young in your heart
  •  Love is not just a one-time thing.
  •  Some of the coolest people are those with the strangest problems!
  • Wrinkles are a sign of the extra smile you threw in to make someone’s day extra special.
  • Fronts people put up are only colorful masks to hide their one big blemish on picture day.
  • If today were meant to be perfect, there wouldn’t be a tomorrow.
  • Don’t look at how far you have to go, look at how far you’ve come.
  • And most important: The only man a girl can ever trust is her daddy.

    I love you always- Kristen

More of her legacy...
